After the 1991 Oakland hills fire destroyed the clients' hillside house and neighborhood, we began the re-building process by analyzing what worked well, and what needed improvement in the original house design.
The clients expressed fondness for various hillside buildings they had seen in the Berkeley hills and in traveling to Europe and Asia. The final design reflected their need for useful spaces, and their interest in both sleek modernism and more folk-based design from the Arts & Crafts movement to Italian hill towns and Tibetan monasteries.
